Burying Water by K.A. Tucker

Review of Burying Water by K.A. Tucker

*SPOILER FREE*

Synopsis:

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

Water was left for dead.. She wakes up in a hospital not know who she is or what happened. She becomes very close with her nurse at the hospital and she unexpectedly makes a new friend in Ginny Fitzgerald, her hospital roommate.

After months in the hospital and no leads on her case, her doctor, Meredith, suggests she start over fresh and move in above Ginny's garage.. which also is next door to Meredith's house...and this is where she meets Jesse.  There is something incredibly familiar about him and Water seems to feel safe with him... this is where her story begins.

This book is told in dual POV.. before & after. We try to put the pieces together on what happened to Water. It's a very heartbreaking story but it also gives you a sense of hope. Water relationships grow with everyone around her. She basically gets a second chance.. but everyone has a secret. A secret that could destroy her further.

Jesse grounds her. He gives her hope that she can move on in her new life. I loved Jesse.. Jesse was gentle and loving. He gave Water everything he had to give. His love for her is resilient just like Water.

"One night, I got out of my car to help a girl with a flat tire.  I didn't know it right then, though.  But I was meant to meet her."

Ginny... oh Ginny. She was a crotchety old bitch. Just telling the truth.. but I somehow fell in love with her the way Water did. Ginny had a hard life that she covers up with a hard exterior.  Not only was Ginny helping Water recover, Water was helping her.  Their friendship was truly unique.  Not to mention, Ginny cracked me up a handful of times...

"Have I ever tole you about the time Meredith cooked dinner and gave everyone food poisoning?"
I stop.  "Is that really true, Ginny?"
She pushes the broom across the floor muttering, "It will be after tonight."

It's hard to make this review spoiler free.. There are so many pieces to this book that make it a top favorite of mine but I can't give you those pieces without giving away the BIG picture.

Burying Water shows me that even in tragedy there is hope.  Even in hard times you can overcome and form new friendships and start over. You make this life what you want it to be.

"I am lost and yet somehow found.  I am afraid and yet somehow comforted.  I am drifting and yet somehow...home."

"The mind, it can be a deceitful thing. But it is no match for the heart."
